Boulder Valley School District Relaunches Anti-Choice Religious Presenter

Brad Seng and Real Choices Pregnancy Center  were put back on the list of approved speakers in BVSD again. Parents, your only choice is to "opt out" of the sex ed program in BVSD. Because they won't tell you (unless your individual school does) when Brad Seng or Real Choices, a religious anti-choice entity, will be talking to your child. I will publish more in the future. For the moment, I am still in shock with BVSD and their poor choices.

CO Denies Science and Reproductive Justice

According to his web site bradseng.com Mr. Seng is scheduled to speak at the public high schools in Mead and Frederick, CO in November 2012. I wonder if the parents in Mead and Frederick know this? In addition, the Boulder Valley School District has accepted Real Choices/Brad Seng's re-application to speak in BVSD again. Roy Holloway, of BVSD told me on September 4, 2012 that BVSD would be reaching their decisions  about who was on the approved speakers list in "a couple of days". Despite being given this information, BVSD has currently not reached a decision and refused to provide me with a list of speakers that are approved to speak with the children. I wish I had faith in their decision making abilities. But so far, I have felt the sting of run arounds and different stories depending on who I speak with in BVSD.

Brad Seng's presentation at Fairview High School on May 2, 2012 has been cancelled.  And the Boulder Valley School District told me they are doing an investigation into "the incident". I wouldn't call 5 years of deception of BVSD parents and misinforming of students "an incident". Also it should be noted that Terry Gillach, the principal at Southern Hills Middle School, claimed their school did a thorough investigation found nothing of consequence. But hopefully BVSD will take a more serious look than Southern Hills did and will remove Brad Seng from the BVSD approved speakers list soon.

BVSD told me there was a Health and Education Advisory sub-committee, overseen by someone named Katy Fleming, that last worked on the approved speakers list in 2008. Other than Katy's name BVSD has not told me anything about this sub-committee and who else was on it. They also told me that it is the principal of each school that approves the speakers coming into the school, and the health teachers choice which speakers coincide with their health program. So we are still left to wonder how this happened and how to prevent it from happening again (weed out the bad apples) in Boulder. I can't believe this happened in Boulder. Wow. Thank you BVSD for cancelling the May 2, 2012 event at Fairview and hopefully investigating everything thoroughly.

BVSD Imports Religious Speaker To Teach Sex Ed

Brand Seng preaches a pro-life, chaste lifestyle. All of his work is rooted in his faith. His web site is bradseng.com. Check it out. The kids in BVSD schools are being directed to his web site during his demonstrations in Boulder Valley Public Middle and High Schools.

In his presentation at Southern Hills Middle School on Friday, April 6, 2012 he did a demonstration with dirty food spit into water glasses and a clean water glass. He also told the kids he lost his virginity and then got it back. A few kids said he used the word "faith".

Of course, everything I am telling you about his time with the BVSD children is coming from the kids themselves. Because I wasn't there. I wasn't notified of a religious speaker coming to talk with my kid or given a chance to respond or attend myself.

My complaints are not in any way with Brad Seng. He can preach whatever he would like. The problem is that he was brought into a public middle and high school system under the radar of the parents. It frightens me what else the school has been forcing on my kid I might not be aware of from the last three years. I am disappointed with the responses that I received from the Principal at Southern Hills Middle School. So far they appear to see nothing wrong with bringing Brad Seng in to talk to our kids. I was passed along three times when I called the BVSD Office of the Superintendent. But when the third person, Roy Holloway, called me back I felt he listened to my concerns carefully. I appreciated that. He said the school district would take a few days to sort it out.

There are many kids in BVSD with parents who engage regularly in sex outside of marriage. There are also many kids with same sex parents who aren't legally allowed to marry yet. Do they love any less? Are their families any less valuable than those of married people having sex? Of course not. To even suggest that there is something dirty or worth spitting on regarding human sexuality is wrong. Teach abstinence in a way all of the kids will respect and value for what it is, without any religious morality attached. I think the kids should be taught to always represent themselves and never feel pressured into anything, by anyone, especially sexually. But religious sexual morality preaching is not appropriate in any public school.

In my perfect world BVSD would have already have apologized to all of the parents and removed Brad Seng and any other religious based speakers from their roster of approved speakers.

But as it stands, Brad Seng is scheduled to speak at Fairview High School May 2, 2012.
